Speaking English does not mean we leave our culturally based mannerisms at the door. With English having become the global language, Karen Fenner, examines the question, “Are we really all saying and understanding the same thing?”.
Presentation Focus:
“Don’t worry, everybody speaks English”, a phrase we hear only too frequently when engaging with international peers. Speaking English does not mean we leave our culturally based mannerisms at the door. With English having become the global language, Karen Fenner, Founder and CEO of Globally Speaking, LLC examines the question, “Are we really all saying and understanding the same thing?”
In today’s digital age, potential inter-cultural misunderstandings are just a click away – an awkwardly worded e-mail, a friendly joke as a lead-in to an international Zoom call, or perhaps “helpful” critique expressed honestly after a presentation could be taken as an insult instead of help.
Karen Fenner, Founder and CEO is originally from Hamburg, Germany. She moved to the United States as a young student giving her the opportunity to grow up in a bi-lingual/bi-cultural environment. This cross-cultural upbringing, her international education, along with years of experience working with global clients give her unique insight to understanding the nuances of culture and how it effects communication, management and socializing styles.
She has taught at numerous top ranked U.S. Executive MBA programs, global Fortune 500 companies, as well as German institutions of higher education.
The focus of Karen’s seminars is on maximizing communication and minimizing conflict when working in a multi-cultural environment. How can we most effectively work together with people from different cultural backgrounds while building trust and open lines of communication – the essential components of well-running global teams. Globally Speaking is an internationally focused cross-cultural consultancy offering companies intercultural management training for over 25 years. Their focus is to provide managers with cross-cultural tools to effectively bridge cultural and language barriers fostering productive and successful global teams.
